Gary McBournie

We first met Gary McBournie in Lyford Cay, during one of our favorite Design Weekends. He was a panelist on the topic of Designing for Island Life. Cue Gary's extensive portfolio of idyllic island getaways. We swooned, and the romance between Gary and oomph was born.

Bright Island Inpired Living Room

From Nantucket to Antigua, the Boston based design firm of Gary McBournie boasts some of the most beautiful and memorable interiors of this time. Frequently featured in the pages of House BeautifulTraditional Home, and Coastal Living, Gary's appreciation for color, form, and function is apparent in every project. His book, LIVING COLOR, only strengthens the message that a colorful home can be sophisticated and elegant, never over the top.

He has shared here a recent project in Nantucket. To us, he is the quintessential Nantucket designer.

Gary attended the New England School of Art in Boston where he studied graphic design, painting and Art History.  A "chance encounter" with the well-known interior designer Richard Fitzgerald and soon found himself as a design assistant with his firm. Working with Fitzerald left a lasting impression along with a fine appreciation for beautiful, traditionally decorated rooms, architecture, English gardens, and, of course, art.

"Absorbing and learning as well as traveling, became essential to my personal and design growth."

In 1992, Gary opened his own firm and has since created warm, inviting homes for clients around the World. His love of color is abundant, so for his friends at oomph, that is music to our ears!

In August, we will join Gary in Nantucket, the island he and his partner, Bill Richards, call home, for Nantucket by Design established by the Nantucket Historical Society. The week of panelists, tours and events all go to support the preservation of Nantucket's historic buildings and sites.
